Alex joined MC after holding  a senior position at the National Crime Agency in the legal team advising the NCA on civil asset recovery and tax proceedings under the Proceeds of Crime Act in the UK.  This work was high profile and involved freezing and obtaining judgments in the High Court in respect of significant worldwide assets acquired using the proceeds of crime.  Alex  secured  orders for sale in respect of high value London property.

Alex can apply his specialist knowledge of asset recovery to New Zealand and assisting the Criminal Proceeds team.

  • NCA v Dong & Fang - obtained summary judgment in respect of tax proceedings under Part 6 of POCA against an individual running a Money Service Bureau laundering  multi-millions of pounds a year.
  • Perry v NCA - settled a large commercial claim for loss of opportunity against the NCA for discontinuing proceedings in which the NCA had frozen 40 million pounds of assets. This claim was worth in excess of 250 million pounds.
  • Blue Holdings v NCA (Court of Appeal) Successfully defended an appeal in relation to disclosure of an International Letter of Request maintaining confidentiality in state to state communications. The Court of Appeal held that the request could be redacted to protect confidentiality and an order for disclosure of a redacted request was made.
